15 Best Cat Foods From Weruva

Stacie and David Forman launched Weruva Inc in 2007 and called it after the couple's three cats, Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa.

The company was founded after the pair became frustrated with the difficulty of finding high-quality food for their cats and decided to acquire fresh human-grade items and create their own cat food recipes.

The company is still family-owned and is based in Natick, Massachusetts. It sells pet food in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan.

All of the company's pet foods are made at a USFDA-approved processing plant in Thailand.

Weruva takes pride in the fresh food products it employs in its pet feeds, only using foods and cuts of meat suited for human consumption.

The best cat foods from Weruva are shown below by BestForPets (bestforpets.org).

Weruva Cat Food Evaluation

Weruva is manufactured by whom and where?

Weruva is still a family-owned business, and while the company is located in the United States, all of its pet foods are manufactured in Thailand.

Despite being manufactured in other countries, all Weruva pet foods exceed USFDA standards.

Weruva is best suited to which kind of cats?

Weruva manufactures a wide selection of cat food items and is likely to have a cat food suitable for practically every cat. Its products are strong in meat-based protein and low in carbs, and many are grain-free.

The company’s different cat food product lines will appeal to consumers looking for high-quality pet food made from whole meats to the same stringent standards as human food items.

Primary Ingredients Discussion

Weruva pet foods’ components are a crucial point of differentiation for the company, and according to its website, four main factors distinguish Weruva foods from most other pet food manufacturers.

With a Carnivorous bent

Weruva Inc knows that both cats and dogs are carnivorous creatures that require the majority of their calories to come from protein and fat found in meat, with very few coming from carbs.

To that goal, all of its products are heavy in meat and include only 1% to 3% carbs.

The utilization of human-grade meats

Weruva takes pride in the quality of the meats used in its pet foods.

All of the company’s goods are manufactured with human-grade meats by a Thai processing business that primarily creates human cuisine.

Produced in accordance with human food standards

Stacie and David Forman established their firm because they wanted the greatest quality food for their cats, and this focus on quality has remained throughout the company to this day.

The Weruva Thailand plant meets the high requirements of the British Retail Consortium, probably one of the most stringent international standards (BRC).

Weruva’s website states that the Thai processing factory received a “A” grade on the BRC criteria.

The use of distinguishable substances

Weruva’s ingredients are not blended into “machine-shaped pieces or unidentifiable loaves.” Instead, their pet foods are produced in such a way that the major ingredients can be seen in the completed products.

Considerations for the Environment

Weruva Inc places a high value on its environmental standards. The company employs BPA-free and recyclable food pouches.

It has teamed with TerraCycle® in the United States to offer a free recycling service for empty Weruva pouches.

The company also obtains its primary food ingredients from ethical sources. Weruva pet food hens are all raised in a cage-free and climate-controlled setting.

The beef and lamb are entirely grass fed and supplied from Australia and New Zealand, and all fish used (excluding basa and tilapia) are ocean caught and certified dolphin and turtle safe.

History of Recalls

Weruva learned in 2017 that a considerable number of cats in Australia were unwell and/or died after drinking Weruva’s Best Feline Friend BFF product line.

In Australia, the firm issued a stop-sale notice on their BFF canned food range until the goods were evaluated and tested.

While there were initial fears that the goods were contaminated with heavy metals, testing by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) ruled that out while identifying that some batches of BFF were thiamine deficient. This vitamin is necessary for a cat’s diet.

Customers in Australia were instructed to return BFF cans having best-before dates ranging from September 2018 through October 2019.

Weruva has never been recalled in the United States or anyplace else outside of Australia.

Paw Lickin’ Chicken Weruva

The predominant protein source in this wet cat food appears to be chicken.

The main component in this dish is boneless, skinless chicken breast. The shredded beef is cooked in chicken broth that has been thickened with potato starch and xanthan gum.

The predominant fat source is sunflower seed oil. It would be ideal to use animal fat. Overall, this is a meat-based cat food with a high protein level, low fat content, and a high carbohydrate content when compared to other canned feeds.

Weruva Paw Lickin’ Chicken contains 85% water, which means it has fewer calories than foods with less moisture. Each 5.5 oz can provides 105 calories, which equates to 19 calories per ounce.

  • Protein-rich diet
  • Contains animal protein sources
  • Plant protein is used sparingly.
  • There are no artificial ingredients.

  • Carbohydrate content that is unnecessarily high
  • Expensive

Tender chicken and duck in gravy are favorites of Weruva Cats in the Kitchen

The principal protein sources in this wet cat food appear to be chicken, tuna, and duck. This dish is mostly composed of boneless, skinless chicken breast, tuna, and duck.

The meat is shredded and placed in a thick broth containing tapioca starch, sunflower seed oil, xanthan gum, and all of the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that cats require.

Overall, this meat-based cuisine is unusually rich in protein, low in fat, and rather high in carbohydrate content because to the presence of starches and thickeners.

This is a low-calorie food, with 64 calories per 3 oz bag, or around 21 calories per ounce.

Because the average cat requires approximately 200 calories per day, you may need to feed your cat three pouches or more every day. This all adds up to a lot of tearing, pouring, and spending money.

  • A good source of nutritious animal protein
  • There are no plant protein fillers.
  • There are no artificial ingredients.

  • On a dry matter basis, it contains around 20% carbohydrate.
  • Expensive
  • Scraping all of the food out of the pouch can be tough.

Chicken Frick ‘A Zee Aus Jus Weruva Cats in the Kitchen

The predominant protein source in this wet cat food appears to be chicken.

This is a straightforward chicken dish with shredded chicken in a sauce made from chicken broth and thickeners.

Multiple gums are used in the recipe to thicken and bind the dish. The component list includes locust bean gum, xanthan gum, and guar gum.

Unlike most Weruva recipes, this one includes fish oil in addition to sunflower seed oil. It’s great to see animal fats in cat food.

The component list concludes with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that complete the nutritional profile of the product.

This is a meat-based food with a high protein content, a low fat content, and a low carbohydrate content.

It’s a low-calorie food, with 143 calories per 6-oz can or roughly 24 calories per ounce, like most Weruva meals.

  • Made primarily from animal protein sources
  • Full of protein
  • Fish oil as a source of omega-3 fatty acids that are species-appropriate
  • Carbohydrate content is low.
  • There are no artificial ingredients.

  • Expensive

WERUVA TruLuxe Pretty in Pink Grain-Free Canned Cat Food with Salmon in Gravy

  • Food Type: Wet
  • Fish broth, salmon, sunflower seed oil, guar gum, and tricalcium phosphate are the first five ingredients.
  • Analysis guaranteed: 10% protein, 1.3% fat, 0.5% fiber, 86% moisture
  • 106 kcal/6-oz can
  • Price per pound/ounce: $0.48

The TrueLuxe range is one of Weruva’s newest offerings, with higher than ever meat inclusions to fulfill carnivorous urges. This recipe is made with a broth-based recipe that is high in moisture and perfect for picky eaters.

The first component in this recipe is fish broth, which is neither unusual nor problematic. Salmon is the main ingredient, which is also a sole source of animal protein.

The sole significant ingredient, aside from the fish broth and salmon, is sunflower seed oil.

In this situation, we don’t mind using this plant-based oil because it contains omega-6 fatty acids, which may assist balance the omega-3 level of the salmon. Fish oil is also incorporated.

Guar gum and xanthan gum are thickeners once more. This recipe’s carbohydrate content is predicted to be less than 2%.

Omg! WERUVA B.F.F. Sweet Cheeks Tuna & Salmon Dinner in Gravy Pouches

  • Food Type: Wet
  • Tuna broth, tuna, salmon, tapioca starch, and sunflower oil are the first five ingredients.
  • Analysis guaranteed: 9% protein, 1.4% fat, 1% fiber, 86% moisture
  • 52 kcal/3-oz pouch
  • Price per pound/ounce: $0.40

Unlike the other two recipes, this one comes in a 3-ounce pouch rather than a can. Many of Weruva’s recipes are available in pouches, which have a higher moisture content than cans.

The primary ingredients in this recipe are tuna and salmon (though they come after tuna broth as the first ingredient).

This makes the meal high in protein and good fats, but it is not a single-source protein recipe, which may be of concern to cat owners.

However, because it is made entirely of fish, it is free of other common proteins such as chicken and beef.

This recipe is high in omega-3 fatty acids because it has salmon and tuna as key ingredients. That is why we are not surprised to see sunflower oil return.

This recipe, however, substitutes tapioca starch for the guar gum and xanthan gum used in earlier preparations.

Topsy Turvy Wet Cat Food WERUVA BFF Play Pate Lovers Chicken & Turkey

  • Food Type: Wet
  • Chicken, chicken broth, turkey, dried egg, and natural flavor are the first five ingredients.
  • Analysis guaranteed: 7% protein, 3% fat, 1% fiber, 84% moisture
  • 168 kcal/5.5-oz can
  • Price per pound/ounce: $0.33

Pate recipes abound in the B.F.F. Play line of goods for cats who have difficulty chewing or simply prefer the texture. The primary components in this recipe are chicken and turkey.

The first component in this recipe is fresh chicken, followed by chicken broth and fresh turkey. Dried egg is an excellent source of protein.

Again, this is not a single-source protein meal, but it is totally poultry-based, making it an excellent choice for cats who are sensitive to or allergic to fish.

Other than the thickeners guar gum and locust bean gum, this mix has no added carbs. The carbohydrate content is believed to be around 2%.

One thing to note is that the fat amount of this recipe is substantially higher than the fat content of the other formulae examined.

Because the moisture level is lower, the statistics are skewed slightly. It could be because the recipe is a pate rather than a gravy or broth – it’s a little more concentrated than the other recipes.

WERUVA Jeopurrdy Licious Slide N’ Serve Dinner Pouches

  • Food Type: Wet
  • Chicken, chicken broth, natural flavor, sunflower oil, and xanthan gum are the first five ingredients.
  • Analysis guaranteed: 9% protein, 4% fat, 1% fiber, 83% moisture
  • 172 kcal/5.5-oz pouch
  • Price per pound/ounce: $0.40

Weruva’s Slide N’ Serve line is comparable to a pate, but it has been pureed into a creamy texture and is served in a pouch. The only protein source in this recipe is chicken.

This pate-style recipe, like the preceding one, is higher in fat and lower in moisture than the gravy- and broth-based recipes.

It still thickens with xanthan gum and locust bean gum, but the carb level is believed to be around 1% to 2%. There is also potato starch.

In general, we find all of these Weruva recipes to be pretty similar. We’d like to see more natural sources of critical nutrients, but we can’t complain about the low carbohydrate level.

What Other Users Have to Say

As pet owners, we understand how important it is to be able to read other people’s evaluations before settling on a brand of pet food.

There are numerous reviews on the Chewy website, which you may read here.

Amazon is also a fantastic site to obtain consumer reviews, and there are many thorough reviews available.

What Is the Price of Weruva Cat Food?

Most Weruva meals will cost between $3.10 and $3.90 per day to feed the average 10-pound cat, based on Weruva’s feeding instructions of one ounce per pound of bodyweight daily.

Foods from the super-premium Truluxe brand will be more expensive, costing roughly $5.50 per day.

Is Weruva a Good Option Overall?

Weruva may be an excellent alternative if you’re seeking for a high-moisture diet comprised mostly of meat with little plant content.

Many of their products are almost entirely plant-free and low in carbs, making them ideal for your obligate carnivore.

On the bad side, their foods are costly and low in calories, costing more than $3 and up to $5.50 or more per day.

Many of their recipes use starches and thickeners, which raises the carbohydrate level to around 20% on a dry matter basis.

Weruva Inc is a family-owned business dedicated to supplying high-quality pet meals.

In all of its products, the company uses top quality real meats and adheres to manufacturing standards more akin to foods made for human consumption than for pets.

From BestForPets‘ (bestforpets.org) research and testing of the best cat foods from Weruva, we found that BFF Grain-Free Cat Food Pouches Variety Pack and Paw Lickin’ Chicken Weruva are the most reliable and well-known choices.

Although they are American-owned and operated, all of the company’s manufacturing is done overseas, which, while not ideal, undoubtedly helps to lower the price of their high-quality pet foods.

However, Weruva cat foods are still fairly pricey when compared to many other brands, and as a result, this is not a smart choice if affordability is your primary priority.
